What do Nerf guns, costumes, the apocalypse, and Portland’s Family Dogs New Life Shelter all have in common? They all play a major part in the Apocalypse Masquerade Ball. We sat down at Analog Café to talk with Samantha Chavez and Jesse Lindsay, the two people behind this fundraising event for the Family Dogs New Life Shelter, which is one of the only no-kill animal shelters in Oregon.
Chavez, who creates masks, hats, jewelry, and other artwork, has been working with charities all her life. She and Lindsay have partnered up for a number of different events, and they keep growing each time.
The Apocalypse Masquerade Ball included performances from Portland musicians such as Kid Pistol and Noraa Ish, a costume contest and fashion show, and a number of local artists and vendors, who range from Breaking Ink tattoos in Hillsboro to art, armor, and modified Nerf guns by Jesse Lindsay Productions (seriously, you need to see these badass Nerf creations). All the vendors donate a portion of their sales, as well as artwork for the raffle, to the cause.
Interested in the next charity event? Chavez says her next show will be a three-day event for autism awareness for her son’s school. The best way to find out more about her upcoming shows in Portland is to add her (Samantha Kay Chavez) on Facebook. Also, be sure to check out Jesse’s artwork at jesselindsay.com.
